Archive for the ‘Europa League’ Category

From when I can remember football was all about achieving as much as you possible could, but over the space of the last month or so this appears to have been lost on Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool FC. Both teams had aspirations of Champions League football next season but come the final fixture of the season, they were both competing for fifth and sixth place, strangely though, the majority of people associated with each club, where hoping their club finished sixth. Surely European football of any kind, is better than none?

If each teams respective managers really do want to disregard the Europa League then surely the benefits of playing the younger players, and giving them much needed experience, would outweigh the negatives? Liverpool have a very impressive youth set up, with the likes of Martin Kelly, John Flanagan and Jay Spearing emerging as talents this season, and Spurs have Danny Rose and Kyle Walker to name but a few. Giving these lads, cold nights, on plastic pitches in some obscure eastern European country will set them up for those future title deciders or grinding out results against the ‘lesser’ teams.

As much as I hate this phrase ‘At the end of the day’ it is a genuine shot at a major trophy, something I feel that neither team can turn their back on, after hardly the most successful century or so. Winning the competition, is also a gateway to Champions League football, which seems like a more feasible route to club football’s greatest competition, with there now appearing to be a ‘top six’ in the Premier League.

Fans are lovely bunch who will celebrate any form of truimph there club achieves no matter how small. The travelling costs, the ticket costs and standing there on a snowy Russian night in just the teams kit, chanting passionately no matter what, surely warrants their ‘heroes’ to give their all in every game, in every competition, in every season?

I hate to say it but football is a business, and the financial gain from entering Europe’s second tier competition are never going to be minimal. In such a current climate where teams are on the brink of administration or folding all together…every penny counts.

If any of these points don’t sway your opinions on the Europa League then answer this question: ‘Would you rather watch Liverpool versus any other team or Neighbours?’
